How can I join a project?

You can join a project either via the iNaturalist website or via our mobile apps. Below are instructions for how to join a project depending on which platform you're using.

How to join a project using the iNaturalist Android app


  1. Open the side menu in the app.
  2. Tap on "Projects".
  3. Tap on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right-hand corner to search for a project.
  4. Tap on the project you want to join.
  5. Tap on "Join" near the top of the screen.
  6. The "Join" button will change to "Leave" when you have successfully joined the project.

How to join a project using the iNaturalist iPhone app


  1. Open the side menu in the app.
  2. Tap on "Projects".
  3. Tap in the search field near the top of the screen to search for a project.
  4. Tap on the project you want to join.
  5. Tap on "Join" near the bottom of the screen.
  6. The "Join" button will change to "Leave" when you have successfully joined the project.

How to join a project using the iNaturalist Classic app


  1. Tap on "Projects" on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Tap on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right-hand corner to search for a project.
  3. Tap on the project you want to join.
  4. Tap on "Join" near the top of the screen.
  5. The "Join" button will change to "Leave" when you have successfully joined the project.

How to join a project using the iNaturalist website


  1. Go to the project's page. You can get there by using the header search, or clicking on a link on an observation page.
  2. Click "Join" (for collection or umbrella projects) or "Join this project" (for traditional projects) on the upper right-hand corner of the page. 
  3. Choose your preferences on the next page and click on "Yes, I want to join".
