There are several types of projects on iNaturalist, and the only type of observation that accepts manual addition of observation is the traditional project. Most projects are collection or umbrella projects and it's not possible to manually add an observation to one of those.
To add an observation to a traditional project, you first must join the project. Below are instructions for how to add an observation to a project using the various iNaturalist platforms.

How to add an observation to a project using the iNaturalist Android app
You can only add your own observations to traditional projects in this app.
- Go to the observation's Details page, either by making a new observation or tapping on an existing observation and tapping on the pencil icon at the top of the screen.
- Tap on "Add to project(s)".
- Any traditional projects you have joined will be shown near the top and have a checkbox next to them. Collection and Umbrella projects you have joined will be listed below those (under a gray bar labeled "Collection and Umbrella Projects") and will not have a checkbox.
- Find the project(s) you would like to add the observation to and tap on the checkbox. You may be asked to fill out Observation Fields, depending on the project. Tap on the project icon to read its About text.
- When you are finished choosing projects, tap on the back arrow to return to your observation's Details page.
- Tap on the green checkmark button at the bottom to save the observation. It may sync on its own, or you may need to manually sync it, depending on your app settings.
How to add an observation to a project using the iNaturalist Classic app
You can only add your own observations to traditional projects in this app. It is currently not possible to add an observation to a traditional project in the iNaturalist app for iPhones.
- Go to the observation's Details page, either by making a new observation or tapping on an existing observation and tapping on "Edit" at the top of the screen.
- Tap on "Projects".
- Any traditional projects you have joined will be shown near the top and have a switch next to them. Collection and Umbrella projects you have joined will be listed below those.
- Find the project(s) you would like to add the observation to and tap on the checkbox. You may be asked to fill out Observation Fields, depending on the project.
- When you are finished choosing projects, tap on "Done" at the top of the screen to return to your observation's Details page.
- Tap on Done at the top to save the observation. It may sync on its own, or you may need to manually sync it, depending on your app settings.
How to add an existing observation to a project using the iNaturalist website
Depending on the observer's Account Settings, you can add any observation to a traditional project, providing it meets the projects terms.
- Go to an observation's page.
- On the right-hand side, look for the Projects section. It may be collapsed, and you may need to open it.
- In the search box, search for a traditional project you have joined.
- Select the project you want to add the observation to.
- The observation will be added to the project, provided it meets the project's terms. You may see a pop-up asking you to fill out Observation Fields for the project. Fields with an asterisk are required for the project.
